North Korea turns to Mongolia for food aid

North Korean Ambassador to Mongolia Hong Gyu revealed to Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj that the politically isolated East Asian country may face a severe shortage of food.

According to information posted by the website for the Mongolian presidency, Gyu requested that the country "study the possibility of providing food assistance" to North Korea.

The former Soviet client state has received humanitarian aide from the United Nations and China since the nineties. Anywhere from 240,000 to 3,500,000 people are thought to have died during the country's mass famine between 1994 and 1998.
